a short word

my tablet PC died! the animation i was making headway on has now hit a snag. BLEH
I'm thinking of getting a cintiq to use for my projects... it would probably be better than the tablet PC anyway. this sucks

Imagination Collaboration!
"Imagine That"
Garrett just posted up this video, which is a film we and Aaron worked on together many moons ago for a PSA contest. God bless youtube. Garrett animated and designed all of the animals and background, and did all of the color styling. I did the design, timing and key animation for the little boy. Aaron did breakdowns, inbetweens and the digital compositing.
i hope you like it

Erin Esurance Fan Art
I was drawing jump kicks yesterday. I never really did many action poses like these in my comics. That needs to change. That turned into this cause I was talking to Carly about Erin Esurance:

Foreshortening's mad wonky. This time, I did the sketch in Flash, cleanup in Photoshop, vector trace in Illustrator, color in Flash, and then tweaking in Photoshop. Convoluted, but I wanted to do a completely digital drawing because I recently upgraded my setup in anticipation of doing comics/animation again and it was fun. Gave me a lot of ideas for changing the way I do things.
As for Erin herself, not only is it just a great design, the commercials are just fantastic. The designs and staging are always really clear. The animation is efficient- it's almost completely anticipation and reaction shots- sparse, but it doesn't tell more than we need to know. Ghostbot has more Erin stuff. Talented people.

Post it dump for January

I scanned part of my mammoth stack of drawn-upon post its. This is what I do when I'm supposed to be working. I've raided the supply closet for new post-it pads more times than I can count.

uh doh bee fo to shawp
Wanted to try out inking in Photoshop so i grabbed a post-it sketch and inked it. KANO gave me a few tips on how he does it. I'm still trying to get it figured out though. it looks really "clean". I'm not used to that at all.

ug

Ever have one of those days where you just cant draw right?

I'm kind of having one today, everything's a little wonky.
There's a thousand wonky drawings inside me trying to get out. These are my best three for today though. :V

castoffs

Here's some designs for a project I got to do development work on! But they were rejected in favor of my talented friend Joe's much more cartoony designs! Good job Joe!
here's some older stuff I dug up that has nothing to do with anything

some animal-ish character designs I never fleshed out.

early character stuff for a commission I was working on (IN FLASH!). I ended up changing the final design but I always liked these originals. It's really hard for me to make decent looking Flash puppets. This was one of the rare times that it worked out decently.

a sexy belly-dancer design from like 2 years ago. It was for the first professional project I ever directed. :3

Fan art

I had a hunger for cartoons this morning and I started watching Dexter's Lab episodes on Youtube.
Some of my favorites:
Mock 5
Aye Aye Eyes
Decode of Honor
G.I.R.L. Squad
Really cool direction. Wish I could work on cartoons as free-wheeling as these. Alright back to work.

it's all about to change
Here's a few more images of the characters from the new [secretproject]. I'll lay it on you:

The Force is strong, unrefined but not without his elegance. He's been heard to say innapropriate comments. But he's the driving force. The Force.

Eff is somewhat neurotic but he's a complete ass if he wants to be. He's that annoying guy you hate hate hate but for some reason he seems so laid back.

Space Gogo Dance 100% YES!

This is Ophelia, Princess of Sector XBBA. She's from yet another old comic of mine that was never finished(my fault entirely). I was only illustrating this comic. the writing was where the funny came from. Of all my unfinished projects I feel the most guilty about not finishing this because it was a collaboration.
Oh well! Enjoy the picture

easier said than done
I recently had a chance to make an illustration for an advertisement using one of my characters. The original idea was to take this image from my film, add a new headline and slap it on a page:

But let's be honest. That would look terrible. I hate when marketing people repurpose screenshots instead of making new artwork, and I drew that picture a year ago. So I did a new one:

-------------------------
EDIT: I think I should mention(cause it's weird), that the inking style is inspired by Looney Tunes Licensing art. I notice this sort of thing because I'm a huge nerd, but bear with me here. For the longest time, Looney Tunes artwork was really really crappy, over-simplified versions of Chuck Jones model sheets wearing basketball jerseys or whatever. UGH. Recently though, they've been making new poses based on Bob Clampett's designs, and they look fantastic. My goal with the above piece was to create some "corporate" cartoon art, so I decided to copy them. Here's what I mean:

Neither of these are quite the epitome of cartoon art, but any shmoe on the street could identify the Daffy on the right as more appealing.
Plus, Clampett's Daffy is just plain old superior to Jones' Daffy. but I guess that's a nerd rant for another time.

oh my poor bloggy
I been neglecting the blogosphere recently, cause I'm hard at work on a new project. It's going to end up being a mix of cartoon, comics, and stupid music. Here's a little teaser of what I've got going:

Every lunch at work, Joe, Danny and I go to the park to draw people. This week was fashion week so there were lots of characters for us to draw. Here's a page:
